Guinea-Bissau 0-1 Egypt: Salah lifts AFCON anxiety with excellent volley
Mohamed Salah scored a fine volley as Egypt won 1-0 against Guinea-Bissau , While Mama Balde netted for Guinea-Bissau but the goal was ruled out by VAR.
Mohamed Salah got Egypt off and running in the Africa Cup of Nations with a well-engineered volley to move second in Group D.
In truth, opponents Guinea-Bissau rarely threatened the seven-time champions of Africa but had made life difficult for them, albeit with Egypt hitting the post three times in total.
For much of the game, anxiety appeared to be creeping into Carlos Quieroz’s side. After such a poor opening performance against Nigeria, the pressure was on the Portuguese to go on the attack.
In picking a front three and allowing Salah to drift to the right, the former Real Madrid coach did appear to liberate his side somewhat.
The Liverpool star hit the post early on and looked a lot more involved than against Nigeria which, usually, spells trouble for pretty much any team in the world. Until his goal, however, Egypt were guilty of wasting opportunities and anxiety looked to be creeping in.
Still, his volley after finding space in the 69th minute is all that matters, particularly after Mama Balde’s stunning late would-be equaliser was chalked off following VAR intervention.
Egypt, at last, have points on the board.
